You won't get the improved tracking of the precision drivers, but you won't have to deal with the quirks that come with the workaround method, either. For example, if you have Elan or Synaptic drivers installed, you should be able to head to Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional Mouse Options and find a separate tab with tweakable multi-finger gestures (depending on your laptop).
